What makes a 3D exhibit defensible
Artec reports scan models from its customers being accepted as evidence in criminal proceedings, and the National Institute of Justice has published on the implications of 3D laser scanned images for the criminal justice system. Neither makes admissibility automatic: it remains the court's decision in your jurisdiction, and it turns on operator qualification, a validated method and an intact chain of custody.
What 3D capture contributes is objectivity. There is no framing decision to argue about and no measurement that depends on a steady hand at the scene — the geometry is recorded, and anybody can re-measure it and get the same number. That is a different position to defend than a set of photographs and a tape measure.
What holds up under examination

Validation against references: Accuracy demonstrated on known objects before the method reaches a case.
Re-measurable by anyone: The opposing expert can take the same measurement from the same file.
Tamper-evident storage: Retention policy, backups and controlled access on your own systems.

What does the opposing expert get?
The same dataset. That is the point of a measurable record: the measurement can be repeated rather than argued about, which is a stronger position than defending a choice of camera angle.
How is the data kept defensible?
Raw capture and processed output are kept separately, with access control, a retention policy and backups, on systems you control. Nothing about the workflow requires the data to leave your network.
Do we need a written procedure before using it on a case?
You should have one. Validate against known references, write the capture and processing steps into your SOP, and record operator training — that is what a review will look at, and we provide guidance and sample datasets to build it.
