Why a photograph and a cast between them still lose the identifying detail
Footwear is identified by wear, cuts and manufacturing characteristics that sit well under a millimetre. A photograph with a scale records outline and pattern but not depth — and depth is what separates the same tread pressed at a different angle or by a heavier person. A cast records depth, once, over a day, and destroys the impression in the process.

Does the impression survive scanning?
Yes — that is the point. Capture is optical and contactless. Nothing is sprayed or pressed onto it, so casting and trace recovery remain possible afterwards.
Can the scan be compared to a shoe?
Yes. Artec Studio exports OBJ, PLY, STL and E57; the questioned impression and a scan of the shoe are aligned and measured in the comparison software your laboratory validates.
What about impressions in snow or dust?
Structured light works on low-contrast substrates without preparation. Ask for your hardest substrate at a demo rather than a test chart.
Is a scan admissible alongside or instead of a cast?
Units use it alongside casting more often than instead, and the choice is yours to validate. The scan is non-destructive and repeatable, which is what makes it the first record rather than the last.
